”Sustainable Campus”
PRE-COURSE ASSIGNMENT
These are instructions for the pre-course assignment of the SGT - Living Lab course.
The course theme is Sustainable Campus. During the course here in Finland, through course cases, lectures and other information sessions we will be looking at different factors and ways to make our campus more ecological and sustainable.
That is also what we want you to do now before the course back in your home country.

PART ONE
Write one A4 paper
A. First tell what interested you to choose this summer school course.
B. 1) Describe one interesting example of an environmental / ecological aspect or a sustainable solution from your home university. It can be something that has been done recently or implemented years ago. Something that you think is important and makes your university more sustainable.
2) Then tell of something you think that should and could be done to improve the sustainability in your university. This can be a technical solution, a new innovation, a practice or a policy to be followed by a group of students, a department or the whole university.
Write your observations and thoughts and describe your proposal for an improvement. We want to hear and learn from examples from different universities around the world. Part A max. 200 words and part B max. 800 words. Maximum total word count is 1000. Use Times New Roman font and font size 10pt.

PART TWO
Make one A3 size poster
- show one of the sustainable improvements you described in your A4 paper. Please present either the existing solution or your proposal for improving the sustainability in your university.
- you can include pictures, photos, drawings, sketches, statements…
- do include short introduction text but NOT the whole content of your A4 paper.
- make sure that the poster is self-explanatory, so that anyone can understand your idea just by looking at it or reading it through.
Design of this A3 poster is free for you to decide. Just leave margins of 1cm on each side and in the lower right corner include a small boxed area with your name, home university and country. Please be prepared to give a short 2-minute presentation of your poster on the first day of the course in Finland (10.8.) We will print out all the posters here at the office so you don’t have to worry about it.

Please send us both your A4 text and A3 poster in PDF-format. Name the files as follows:
YourLastname_text.pdf and YourLastname_poster.pdf. Send your text and poster by email with subject topic: “SGT PRE-COURSE TASK” to pamela.arslan @ aalto.fi by 1.8.2011 - one week before the beginning of the course.
